Why book a private tour to Medjugorje from Split?

Unlike group bus tours that may allow only extremely limited time in Medjugorje, as it is usually part of a wider itinerary that may include a visit to Mostar, you would rather want to dedicate your time and energy solely to Medjugorje.
Since Medjugorje is in Bosnia-Herzegovina, border authorities require all passports to be scanned the driver needs to do extra paper work. Quite often, this creates long lines of buses stuck at the border. Instead of wasting your time and energy, we suggest booking a private tour. Conveniently, small passenger vehicles, like the ones Portal Day Tours uses, usuallyhave a quick and efficient passport and customs control.

    Description

Your private tour guide will meet you at the arranged time and place and take you to Medjugorje by a sedan car or a minivan. As you leave Split, benefit from a great view of Central Dalmatian islands, followed by spectacular Dalmatian mountains of Mosor and Biokovo.
The Autobahn-style modern highway will make the journey extremely smooth and pleasant. As you approach the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina, your guide/driver will introduce you to the country that was terribly affected by the war of Former Yugoslavia (1992-1996), but managed to rise from the ashes and become one of the most peaceful places in the world. Medjugorje is just a 15-minutes-drive from the highway. Situated in the picturesque area of Herzegovina, full of vineyards and olive groves,

Medjugorje has become one of the most popular places in the Balkans. A group of children, back in 1981, excitedly and persistently claimed to have seen a vision of Blessed Virgin Mary up on a hill above their village. Although many, including some high Church officials, were sceptical about the reports of supernatural events, hundreds of thousands, even millions, of pilgrims have since visited Medjugorje.

Some witness to miraculous effects experienced in Medjugorje, whereas others claim that a personal conversion took place, making them change their former lifestyle and start living their faith. Some pilgrims report being blessed by the soul-searching confession they had in Medjugorje, comparable to a deep spiritual psychotherapy. Consequently, Catholics (and not just Catholics) from all around the world have been common in Medjugorje, hoping to reap spiritual blessings.

Holy Mass in the parish church of St. James in Medjugorje is, therefore, celebrated in many languages, including a daily Mass in English. Your arrival to Medjugorje will be right at that time, so plan to attend this special event. Depending on the groups of pilgrims present at Medjugorje, other languages would also be heard there, as well as church choirs from different countries.
Plan to make good use of your free time. Souvenir shops offer a wide selection of religious items, like rosaries, crosses and statues, whereas bookstores offering spiritual literature in English are also common in Medjugorje. Irish and Italian humanitarian organizations are also active there, so you may decide to pay them a visit.
Restaurants and pizzerias are there to offer physical nourishment, and also provide additional opportunities to meet more interesting people.

The climb up the Apparition Hill is somewhat challenging, but if you take your time and walk carefully, it may well be the highlight of your pilgrimage. Nevertheless, many report being invigorated and profoundly strengthened by the endeavor. The drive back to Split is bound to encourage deep contemplation and rest. On the other hand, your guide will be more than happy to share more insights on Medjugorje and Croatia in general.

    Important hints

    • Make sure to take your passport. Expect your tour guide/driver to remind you before
      you leave
    • Although the official currency of Bosnia and Herzegovina is Bosnian mark (1€=2
marks), all shops and restaurants accept euros. Credit cards are not always accepted,
though, so take enough cash with you.
